Reading
Our Reading Scheme is Rising Stars Reading Planet which supports children's reading development through a wide range of engaging text types, such as stories, traditional tales, non-fiction and information books, poems, playscripts and autobiographies, to name but a few. Children ae taught how to decode words as soon as they start school through the teaching of Phonics from Nursery to Year 2 and beyond. This teaches them how to segment words using the phonic sounds they know, helping them to make sense of what they are reading once the sounds have been 'blended' back together.
Children are also explicitly taught the skills of reading through the Literacy Shed programme, Vipers.
VIPERS is an acronym to aid the recall of the 6 reading domains as part of the UK’s reading curriculum. These are the key areas which children need to know and understand in order to improve their comprehension of texts.

The 6 domains focus on the comprehension aspect of reading and not the mechanics: decoding, fluency, prosody etc. As such, VIPERS is not a reading scheme but rather a method of ensuring that teachers ask, and students are familiar with, a range of questions. They allow the teacher to track the type of questions asked and the children’s responses to these which allows for targeted questioning afterwards.
